corals for idiots (16 posts)

I have a FOWLR tank that’s been set up for about 3 months.  I previously had one set up for 4 yrs, (FO) that crashed due to velvet (I saved only two fish and the snails).  I want to try mushroom corals, but I don’t know what to start with or where the best place to get one is.  I want to start with something cheap in case it croaks.  I have purple coraline growing on the rock and just plain old flourescent lighting (old fashioned covered hood).  What should I start with?

    Thanks, guys!

If you’re anything like me (and I’m definitely new to reefing) you’ll be more worried about xenia growing too fast instead of being worried about it dying :)

I have some blue/purple mushrooms in my refugium that I could part with if you are interested. I am going to try to make it to the March meeting on the 10th, let me know.

Hi Shelly, how are your corals doing?  Charlie’s blue/purple mushrooms are purdy!

Charlie:  I am definitely interested!  Thanks so much!  Please let me know how much you want for them. I’d also be more than willing to come pick them up, if that works for you, and I’d love the chance to see your tanks while I’m there. So far, I’ve gotten the chance to see Michael’s and Joanne’s – both were awesome.

Michael:  Still no fatalities, so far.  (I try my best not to murder other people’s pets whenever possible). I moved everybody to my 55-gallon, so they have lots of room now. I’ve had to move the Xenias around a bit to make sure they are getting enough water flow, so I’m still kind of experimenting with the proper placement for a couple of them. I’m feeding them and the mushrooms  Microvert 2x per week.  Is there anything else I need to be doing for them, other than this and keeping all the parameters in check? I also feed either brine or mysis (both soaked in Selcon) to the fish, so I’m assuming the corals are getting the benefit of this as well.  Additionally, I add 8-9 drops of Iodide (Kent) to the water every night, which I’ve always done for the snails, shrimp, and hermits, anyway.  I do it daily because I know the skimmer removes it.  (Bak-Pac 2)

I also have a general question for you guys, if you don’t mind:  I added a bubble coral to the tank, (after getting Joanne’s opinion – so far, it is doing incredibly well), and since my tank was FO for four years, I never checked the calcium.  Now that I’m doing corals, I decided I’d better start.  I have 500ppm in there now and I saw where you said you keep yours, Michael, at 425-ish.  Is mine too high?  Can it be too high?  Also, I’ve always used Instant Ocean salt mix, but the guy at Petco said I need to use something else now because it doesn’t have calcium in it.  I don’t generally pay much attention to Petco guys (unless it’s Rich, which it wasn’t).  What do you use?  Also, how do I have 500ppm of calcium in my tank without ever adding it?  I do have a crushed coral substrate, is that where it’s coming from?  One last thing:  how often should I be checking for it?

Also, you said the next meeting is on March 10th, but where and what time?  I checked the meetings forum, but didn’t see it.  Do you guys post it somewhere else?

Thanks, as always, for your help, you guys. Until I found you, I didn’t know anybody besides me who had saltwater tanks. I am so happy that I found you and I appreciate your advice, opinions, and help very much.

There are a few pet shop guys in town who are very knowledgeable, but I’ve always had to take their advice with a grain of salt, because, in the end, they want to sell you something.  With you guys, I don’t have to worry about that, and that makes a huge difference.

I’m looking forward to the meeting so I can meet more of you guys in person.

haha hmmmm – ok, I can answer some of those questions I guess :)

The meeting – the where I haven’t decided yet… It’ll be at 7 PM though! I still need to find someone to host, otherwise you will have to roll down the hill for the meeting at my house ;) hahaha

And your calcium levels – Instant Ocean does have calcium in it, you don’t need to dose, but some do. Typically I’ve found IO to have a CA level around 380 or so out of the bucket, I dose to keep mine somewhere between 420 and 450. I’ve actually switched to Reef Crystals as out of the bucket it generally tests above 420. I am horribly lazy about dosing, so any salt that has what I need in it without extra dosing makes me a happy camper!

I’d guess your CA is 500 because of your crushed coral – which is a good thing! Just keep watching it, 500 isn’t bad, assuming your ALK and MG balance it out.

What do I mean by balanced?? CA, ALK and MG all play a part in how our corals build their skeletons… keeping these levels in “balance” makes it easiest for our corals to build those skeletons, and keeps your tank happy. More info, and a calculator is here to help you determine what your MG and ALK should be given your CA is 500 - http://reef.diesyst.com/flashcalc/flashcalc.html

I’d suggest that you get a second opinion, on your Calcium test, by having someone else test it, with a different test kit.  I’d be very surprised if your Calcium is really that high. CA of 500 is higher than it needs to be, but won’t hurt anything at all.  As Joanne mentioned, it’s important to keep your Ca, Alk and Mg all balanced.  In my signature, there’s a link to a reef chemistry calculator, which can help explain some of this and help get you balanced.  Oh, I just noticed that Joanne posted a link to it, which is good, because my signature no longer exists…lol.

Oh and Instant Ocean will be just fine, you were right not to listen to the guy…lol.  I’ve been using IO since I started, as have hundreds of thousands of other hobbyists, with full reef tanks.

Thanks, guys, for your help.  I’m glad to hear that the IO salt is fine.  It’s the only thing I’ve ever used and I didn’t really want to change to something else.  I will look at the link you sent and get it all figured out – eventually!

Shelly, sorry, I never got a message that said you replied, my bad.

But yeah, if you wanna come over, that would be just fine with me, but I am coming over for the meeting on the 10th of March so that may be just as easy. Just remind me and I will throw a couple in a container before I leave the house :) :) .

Ah Petco people, most of them need a good slap :)   I recently got into an argument with one, he told me that ALL puffers were brackish.  I was buying a little pea puffer that they had mislabeled as a green spotted.

Anyway, don’t take what they say as fact, most of the employees aren’t very informed.  I too use instant ocean, just switched to reef crystals, but was using regular IO for 2 years.

Can you have a high amount of CA if you don’t have any corals using it up??

Using regular IO I would doubt the CA would ever be that high unless the SG is like 1.032 or something crazy hehe.  For the crushed coral to add to the calcium i believe the PH would have to be super low in order to start dissolving it.
